Area rugs are one of the easiest ways to spruce up and add finishing touches to your home’s interior decor. However, to find the right rug, there’s more to choosing the perfect size, style, and type. This simple guide will give you quick pointers that are sure to make rug shopping easier and hassle-free.
Living Room

When shopping for living room rugs, decide first on the layout of your sofa set. This will help determine the proper size of your living room rug. If your sofas are up against the wall, make sure your rug covers up to the front legs of your chairs from the center of the room.
If your sofas are in the middle of the room and facing each other, select a rug that is big enough to anchor all sofa chair legs yet smaller than the total size of your living room. This creates a border that exposes the floor underneath.
Dining Room

For dining room rugs, the shape of your furniture can dictate the type of rug needed. For long tables, rectangular rugs work best while round tables call for round rugs.
To create balance, you can measure the length and width of your dining table and add 2 feet on each side. This will help ensure your rug is proportionate to the dining table. Also, note that your chairs don’t need to be covered inside the rug.
Bedroom
Depending on the size of your bedroom, bedroom rugs can be used to define separate areas and pull large spaces together. Rugs can either be away from the bed and used to extend to other areas such as your closet or used to accentuate the coziness and comforting feel of your bed. As a rule of thumb, bedroom rugs should cover at least 2/3 of the bed from the foot of it.
