These home improvement projects may not cost a lot, but they’re sure to make a huge difference in how your home functions—whether you’re a renter, new nester, or DIY-er. Try one or more of these weekend projects to make your home look and feel its best.
The Renter

Add living color: Is your home short on outdoor space or impressive views? Try bringing organic colors, textures, and forms indoors by displaying an array of potted plants in a bright corner. You can also start cultivating a countertop herb garden.
Dress up your walls for the short term: Give your perimeters some panache by using peel-and-stick wallpaper that can be easily removed and reused. Get creative with self-adhesive wall coverings and use these to add color, pattern, and dimension in an otherwise blah single feature wall.

Upgrade your light fixtures: Can your new home use a quick pick-me-up? Replace outdated light fixtures in your kitchen, bedroom, or living room with newer, more stylish dimmer lights that let you regulate brightness and vary the atmosphere.
Improve curb appeal: Help your guests and new neighbors find your new digs easily! Paint your front door a standout hue, like red, blue, or yellow; put up noteworthy, hard-to-miss house numbers; and put up eye-catching light fixtures as well. You can also pot up some colorful plants and flowers and place them on your porch or driveway.
The DIY-er

Build a window seat: Your handy, willing hands will appreciate the extra seating, bonus storage, and attention-grabbing style that a new window seat presents. If you have finished or unfinished kitchen cabinets lying around, you can raise them on a fiberboard platform and top them with a painted plank. You can also add a cushion and pillows to boost the comfort level of your new window seat.
Go green: Get into the farm-to-table trend by growing your own vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers. Make the most out of the free space in your garden by turning over and amending the soil to create garden spaces and install raised planting beds for tomatoes, peppers, and salad greens.
